2020 has been a year like no other. It has been the year of increased uncertainty, stress, and anxiety to say the least. Feelings like these present themselves differently in all of us, and without an understanding of how to handle and overcome them it can be far too easy to let them overwhelm and consume us. We have had to accept many things during this time as “the new norm,” but a constant state of worry, anxiety, and stress should not be one of them. As we enter a new year, perhaps we can harness the strength we have had to conjure in these difficult times and instead find and maintain a sense of calm. Know that we have the ability to tap into our inner selves, and embrace new found resilience to enhance our overall health and emotional well-being in 2021.
Resilience is our capacity to prepare for, recover from, and adapt in the face of stress, challenge, and adversity. If ever there were a time to equip ourselves with this ability it would be now. Resilience is a key focus of a system called HeartMath. a system that teaches people how to self-regulate their emotions and behaviors in an effort to reduce stress and increase one’s resilience. HeartMath counters the effects of stress by teaching us how to control our heart rate in combination with actively shifting our attitudes and emotions to achieve better outcomes and overall health.
Our Emotions and feelings have a huge impact on out bodies. Positive and uplifting emotions like appreciation, care, and joy have a positive impact on our bodies. These emotions have the power to synchronize our bodies systems. Research at the HeartMath Institute has shown that when you intentionally shift to a positive emotion, heart rhythms immediately change. A shift like this creates a flood of neural, hormonal, and biochemical events that benefit the entire body creating immediate and lasting effects. Likewise, the negative emotions associated with stress cause irregularities in heart rhythms and disorder in the nervous system. When we can consciously and deliberately focus on genuine positive and renewing emotions it will lead us to harmony in heart rhythm causing other bodily systems to also sync up to this rhythm. This process is called coherence, (an optimal state of mind body balance). Reaching a level of coherence can lead to mental clarity, creativity and better problem-solving abilities. With a system like HeartMath that encourages continual practice of obtaining and maintaining coherence, we can handle stressful situations with much more ease.
Here at IM of CNY we have been working to become Certified HeartMath Practitioners. We are pleased to now be able to share with you a powerful system and an understanding of the tools and techniques that will reconnect people with their hearts, enabling them to become their most strong resilient selves.
