Spring is in the air, as soft warmer winds blow gently through our hair. Winter’s thaw opens our senses to green grass, daffodils, tulips, the return of chipping birds, croaking toads, baby animals, and possibly most anticipated and longed for by many - SUNNY days! According to Chinese Traditional Medicine, Spring equals Happy. This is totally logical because as the sun gets higher following the equinox, it is in the sky longer providing us with natural endorphin and mood boosting Vitamin D. That’s something to get excited about!
On the other hand, Spring can also leave some feeling a little unsettled or off kilter. Spring is the time of the year when weather can be quite unpredictable, meaning we could go from snow to rain and cold to hot all within a few days of each other. Because of the inconsistent weather patterns, some folks are prone to more headaches and those with arthritis and chronic back pain report feeling more discomfort.
Despite some of the pitfalls of Spring, I believe there are many benefits that produce feelings of optimism. Here are a few to consider:
Temperatures are Moderate: After the long bitterness of winter, warmer temperatures are certainly welcomed, even if a little inconsistent at first. Studies show that people are most comfortable in temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees.
You Can Go Outside: During the spring, many feel as though a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. Whew! Literally though, you can finally get rid of heavy coats, hats, and boots and enjoy the weather with lighter clothing. Being outside is certain to boost your mood!
Exercise: You can take your exercise routine outdoors! Get out into nature and let it stimulate your senses, increase creativity, and boost your mood. If you enjoy running, mindful walking, hiking, yoga or even meditation. All are wonderful opportunities to get outdoors and breathe in the fresh air. What are you waiting for? Get out there and take in a great big inhale of goodness!
Growing Plants Absorb Carbon Dioxide: Not to get too scientific, but did you know that plants take in roughly 25 percent of the carbon emissions humans produce, absorbing more than 100 gigatons of carbon through photosynthesis each growing season. That means that every Spring and Summer, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are reduced. It’s truly amazing what a little sunlight and water can do for plants, flowers, grass, and our precious environment.
This Spring, I encourage you to create space for new resolutions and fresh commitments. Be optimistic. Do some spring cleaning. Get rid of unwanted clutter in your life. Be grateful for the season! Fling open the windows, sing from the top of your lungs, and allow the fresh air to flow!
